The ruins of Žovnek castle fire one`s imagination about one of the oldest castles of Slovenia. Its history goes back to at least the 12th century. The Žovnek noble family used to live there at the end of 12th century, but their descendants moved to Celje (Cilli) in 1333 and went to aquire title and estates, becoming the Counts of Cilli.
After a lovely walk up the hill there is a beautifull view over lake Žovnek and its surrounding hills all the way to Celje from the castle.
